The Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) announced the winners of its 3rd annual "Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County" award on Monday night.

Santa Clarita won the award for cities with more than 50,000 residents.  Culver City was one of five finalists for the sub-50,000 category, but alas, we were edged out by the City of Vernon.

It's no wonder.  Vernon's "customers" are not its residents -- afterall, it has just 100 residents -- but the businesses that employ over 50,000 day residents.  After reading the stats on this tiny city, I don't feel bad about losing.  They deserved it.

Here are some of the reasons why Vernon beat out Culver City, Santa Fe Springs, La Mirada, and Monrovia as this year's 50,000-residents-or-less most business-friendly city in LA County:

  • 100 residents, but over 50,000 employess commute into the city to work.  With that makeup, the government is geared mostly towards serving businesses.
  • Provides its own water, natural gas, and electricity.  Plus, electric rates consistently 10-40% lower than its neighbors.
  • No utility tax.
  • Free spending redevelopment agency -- $40 million has been spent on infrastructure and land development.  (Remember, 100 residents!)
  • "One stop" service counter to answer questions about zoning requirements, building codes, and/or public works.

The criteria for selecting the winner:

  • Demonstrated commitment to economic development as a priority
  • Excellence in programs and services designed to facilitate business entry, expansion, and retention
  • Economic development activity over the past three years
  • Competitive business tax rates and fee structures
  • Availability of economic incentives
  • Effective communication with and about business clients
